More About the Demographics of Rockford, IllinoisLocated just at the center of the northern border of Illinois in south Winnebago County, the Rockford area is a combination of small-town atmosphere and abundant city amenities. With a population of just over 295,000, it is large enough to have various opportunities for employment along with cultural events and a thriving medical industry.
Although the Rockford area rivals Peoria as the second-largest city in Illinois, it still has a classic smaller town feel and retains its beauty, thus the name "City of Gardens."
Brief History of the AreaWhen the area was first settled in 1834, it was first adeptly called Midway because it is located halfway between Chicago and Galena. However, as the settlement on the Rock River was a natural ford, the city soon became the name that stuck. The town was originally home to many elm trees and gained the nickname "Forest City," although Dutch Elm disease all but wiped out the population of elm trees in the mid-1900s.
The town grew into an industrial city over the next century and a half, starting with manufacturing in the late 1800s, becoming one of the largest furniture manufacturing centers in the United States. After both world wars, the need for furniture manufacturing began to dwindle. In response, the town turned to tools, automotive, and other machinery production.
Today, although there is still manufacturing in the area, the city became a regional hub for medical facilities and shopping. It also boasted many events at its MetroCentre and was named "Sportstown USA" for the state of Illinois. With its 7,000 acres of parks and tree-lined streets, the city still retains the look of a "Forest City."
