An All-American City in the Heart of Illinois: Peoria

Being named the "average American city" has made Peoria famous. The three-time awarded "All-American City" has a historical depiction of what an average city in America should look like nationwide.

In Vaudeville times, the saying was coined, "Will it play in Peoria?"  This saying meant that if an act could succeed there, due to its "average" audience, it could succeed anywhere. The city has taken pride in being a mainstream Midwest city and continues to be one of the larger towns in Illinois.

Oldest City In Illinois

The city outdates the surrounding towns as a settlement by several decades. French settlers first came to the area that would eventually become Peoria in 1680, about 50 years earlier than some of the other neighboring cities. The settlers built a fort, which would later burn to the ground. However, the fort was rebuilt in 1813 as Fort Clark, which would later be renamed Peoria, from a Native American word that translates as "fat lake."

The area is home to a varied background of economic development, from alcohol distilleries to heavy machinery.

  • Alcohol. At one point in its history, the city had the most distilleries of any town in the world, with twenty-two distillery businesses and many breweries in the mid-1800s. Historically, there was more tax revenue generated from alcohol in the area back then than anywhere else in the country. When prohibition hit, it was also one of the largest bootlegging communities as well.
  • Machinery. In the early 1900s, the city was home to one of the larger heavy machinery companies in the country. Caterpillar Tractor Co., which still has its headquarters in the city, was founded in 1925. They began manufacturing the well-known dozers in 1935.
  • Farming. The area is fortunate to have very fertile ground and a centralized location that is ideal for the growing and shipment of farm crops and livestock.

Another smaller industry, bicycles, were exported all over the world from the city in the late 1800s. It is touted that one of the bicycle manufacturers, Charles Duryea, was the first commercial gasoline-powered automobile in the area in 1893.

Jonathan Rosenfeld was professionally objective, timely, and knowledgeable. Also, his advice was extremely effective regarding my case. In addition, Jonathan was understanding and patient pertaining to any of my questions or concerns. I was very happy with the end result and I highly recommend Jonathan Rosenfeld. Michonne Proulx
★★★★★
Extremely impressed with this law firm. They took control of a bad motorcycle crash that left my uncle seriously injured. Without any guarantee of a financial recovery, they went out and hired accident investigators and engineers to help prove how the accident happened. I am grateful that they worked on a contingency fee basis as there was no way we could have paid for these services on our own. Ethan Armstrong
★★★★★
This lawyer really helped me get compensation for my motorcycle accident case. I know there is no way that I could have gotten anywhere near the amount that Mr. Rosenfeld was able to get to settle my case. Thank you. Daniel Kaim

Jonathan did a great job helping my family navigate through a lengthy lawsuit involving my grandmother's death in a nursing home. Through every step of the case, Jonathan kept my family informed of the progression of the case. Although our case eventually settled at a mediation, I really was impressed at how well prepared Jonathan was to take the case to trial. Lisa
