If you travel west from Chicago on Interstate 88, you will pass through the northern outskirts of Aurora, IL, known as the "City of Lights."
This town, nestled in the Fox Valley near Fox River, has grown from a small family settlement in 1834 to a thriving community of almost 200,000. The city's geographical boundaries have grown as has the population. Aurora city limits now comprise areas of Kane County, DuPage County, Will County as well as Kendall County.
City Of Lights: The Nation's First City to use Electric Lights for City StreetsThe city was established with a post office as a settlement in 1837, three years after the founder Joseph McCarty moved to the valley and sent word to his family in New York to come west. Aurora was named after the goddess of the dawn and was the first city in the U.S. to use electricity for public lighting, giving the town its new name, "City of Lights."
Aurora Today: A Fast-Growing Midwestern CityWhile Aurora was a manufacturing city for over a hundred, as the 20th century ended, it has become more diverse in its economic and cultural opportunities. Although manufacturing and technology are still present, there has been a growth in tourism and entertainment as well.
The city is delineated into three general areas, the west side, the east side, and the area referred to as Fox Valley. The west side is the area west of the Fox River, and the east side refers to the opposite side of the river. The Fox Valley area is farther east and is more named for the mall that resides there then the valley itself.
Entertainment and cultural activities have grown in the last few decades. The downtown area on the river has the Hollywood Casino, which is one of the larger employers in the city. There are also many architectural landmarks, with structures designed by people, including Frank Lloyd Wright and several others. The city has its own zoo, museums, and theaters to entertain locals and tourists alike.
The city supports six different school districts, private schools, a college, and the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy within the city limits. The City Hall website provides information for both residents and visitors local events, utilities, and city department and service information.
